1. A system comprising:
a communication device, having a portable computer-driven part, accessing a file system that includes a plurality of files, each file being representative of a compressed version of a sound, and collectively having the capability of accessing any of said plurality of sounds,
said portable computer driven part detecting an indication that there is an event in said communication device, detecting a type of said event,
said portable computer detecting said type of said event by detecting an incoming call as a first event at a first time, and selecting and playing a first one of said compressed versions of said sounds responsive to detecting said incoming call as said first event to indicate said first event, and detecting an appointment reminder time as a second event at a second time, and selecting and playing a second one of said compressed versions of said sounds responsive to detecting said appointment reminder as said second event to indicate said second event.
2. A system as in claim 1, wherein said computer automatically extracts a melody line from said compressed version media by determining tones representing musical notes that are part of the compressed version media, and said sound is only said melody line, and not the actual compressed version media.
3. A system as in claim 1, wherein said compressed version is an MP3.
4. A system as in claim 1, wherein said computer-driven part dynamically selects a specified part of each sound according to parts of said each sound that has been played previously.
5. A system as in claim 1, wherein said computer-driven part determines which part of a sound was most recently played, and selects a most recently played part of the sound to indicate said event while excluding other parts of the sound from being played to indicate said event.
6. A system as in claim 1, wherein said computer-driven part allows selection of only a portion of the compressed sound represented by one of said files, and plays only the portion to indicate said event.
7. A method as in claim 6, further comprising detecting an indication of an incoming fax as a third event at a third time, and selecting and playing a third one of said compressed versions of said sounds responsive to detecting said incoming fax as said third event to indicate said third event.
8. A system as in claim 1, wherein said portable computer driven part further detecting said type of event by detecting an indication of an incoming fax as a third event at a third time, and selecting and playing a third one of said compressed versions of said sounds responsive to detecting said incoming fax as said third event to indicate said third event.
9. A method comprising:
detecting a specified event, using a computer-driven communication part, which specified event needs to be communicated to a user;
using said computer-driven communication part to read music from a compressed format;
using said computer-driven communication part to play at least of part of said music, to signal the specified event, where different music is played for different ones of said specified events, where a first specified event is an incoming call to a portable phone, and a first item of music from said compressed format is played to signal the incoming call as said first specified event; and
using said computer-driven communication part to maintain a calendar of appointments, wherein a second specified event signals one of said appointments, and a second item of music, different than said first item of music, from said compressed format is used to signal said appointment as said second specified event.
10. A method as in claim 9, wherein said using said computer-driven communication part to select comprises using said computer-driven communication part to extract a melody line from said media, by determining tones representing notes that are part of the music stored in the compressed format, and to play only said melody line to signal the specified event, where said using plays only said melody line, and not the actual music stored in the compressed format.
11. A method as in claim 8, further comprising using said computer-driven communication part to maintain a calendar of appointments, wherein said specified event signals one of said appointments, and a different music is used to signal the appointment than the music that is used to signal the incoming call.
12. A system comprising:
a communication device, having a portable computer-driven part, accessing a file system that includes a plurality of files, each file being representative of a compressed version of a song, and collectively having the capability of accessing any of said plurality of songs, said portable computer driven part detecting an indication that there is an incoming communication from said communication device, detecting information about said incoming communication, selecting one of said compressed versions of said songs to signal said communication based on said information, by playing a ring tone that is based on said one of said compressed versions, said computer-driven part allowing manual selection of only a portion of one of said compressed songs from said files, and wherein said playing a ring tone comprises playing only said portion of said song that was manually selected, to indicate said incoming communication represented by said information,
wherein said computer driven part controls said ring tone, and a first item of music from said compressed format is played to signal the ring tone; and
said computer-driven part maintains a calendar of appointments, wherein a second specified event signals one of said appointments, and a second item of music, different than said first item of music, from said compressed version of a song, is used to signal said appointment as said second specified event.
13. A system as in claim 12, wherein said computer automatically extracts a melody line from said compressed version song by determining tones representing notes that are part of the music stored in the compressed format, and said sound is only said melody line, and not playing of the actual compressed version media.
14. A system as in claim 12, wherein said compressed version is an MP3.
15. A method comprising:
detecting an event that needs to be signaled to a user, using a computer-driven communication part, which specified event needs to be communicated to a user;
using said computer-driven communication part to read music from a compressed format;
allowing a user to specify only a portion of said music to be used as an event communication signal; and
using said computer-driven communication part to play only said part of said music to signal the event and not to play the entirety of said music to signal the event, where different music is played for different ones of said events, and where a first specified event is an incoming call to a portable phone, and a first item of music from said compressed format is played to signal the incoming call as said first specified event; and
using said computer-driven communication part to maintain a calendar of appointments, wherein a second specified event signals one of said appointments, and a second item of music, different than said first item of music, from said compressed format is used to signal said appointment as said second specified event.
