1. A smartcard comprising:
a substrate having a smartcard chip thereon; and
a secondary memory device on said substrate and operatively connected to the smartcard chip,
wherein said secondary memory device is configured to store a plurality of pages of data, each page having associated with it a unique sequence number, the sequence number being stored separately from the page so that when the page is to be read, the sequence number retrieved with the page can be compared with the stored sequence number to authenticate the page.
2. A smartcard according to claim 1 wherein said secondary memory device is a FLASH ROM.
3. A smartcard according to claim 1 wherein the stored sequence number is stored in the smartcard chip.
4. A smartcard according to claim 1 wherein some of the stored sequence numbers are stored in at least one page of the plurality of pages of data stored on the secondary memory device, the sequence number for that at least one page being stored in the smartcard chip.
5. A smartcard according to claim 1 wherein the sequence numbers are XOR’d to produce a digest or HASH which is stored in a smartcard EEPROM.
6. A smartcard according to 1 wherein the sequence number for each page of data is set initially at a randomly generated value.
7. A smartcard according to clam 1 wherein each page contains a copy of its page number.
8. A smartcard according to claim 1 wherein the data in each page is encrypted.
9. A smartcard according to claim 1 wherein page data integrity is protected with a cryptographic MAC.
10. A smartcard according to claim 1 wherein the data in each page is encrypted, and page data integrity is protected with a cryptographic MAC, wherein page encryption and cryptographic MAC are performed using a page and chip unique key.
11. A smart card comprising:
a substrate having a smartcard chip thereon; and
a secondary memory device on said substrate and operatively connected to the smartcard chip,
wherein said secondary memory device is configured to store a plurality of pages of data, each page having associated with it a unique sequence number, the sequence number being stored separately from the page so that when the page is to be read, the sequence number retrieved with the page can be compared with the stored sequence number to authenticate the page; and

wherein the sequence number associated with a particular page of data is changed each time the page is modified or updated.
12. A smartcard according to claim 11 wherein the sequence number for each page of data is set initially at a randomly generated value.
13. A smartcard according to claim 11 wherein each page contains a copy of its page number.
14. A smartcard according to claim 11 wherein the date in each page is encrypted.
15. A smartcard according to claim 11 wherein each page data integrity is protected with a cryptographic MAC.
16. A smartcard according to claim 11 wherein the data in each page is encrypted, and page data integrity is protected with a cryptographic MAC, wherein page encryption and cryptographic MAC are performed using a page and chip unique key.
17. A smartcard according to claim 11 wherein said secondary memory device is a FLASH ROM.
18. A smartcard comprising:
a substrate having a smartcard chip thereon; and
a secondary memory device on said substrate and operatively connected to the smartcard chip,
wherein said secondary memory device is capable of storing a plurality of pages of data, each having associated with it a unique sequence number, the sequence number being stored separated from the data page so that when the page is to be read, the sequence number retrieved with the page can be compared with the stored sequence number to authenticate the page; and
wherein the sequence number for each page of data is a randomly generated value.
19. A smartcard according to claim 18 wherein the sequence number associated with a particular page of data is changed to another randomly generated value each time the page is modified or updated.

1. Apparatus for use in a wireless communications base station comprising:
A receiver for monitoring at least one prescribed portion of a control channel resource of an incoming control channel to detect an incoming unlink traffic channel request from at least one mobile unit to which said at least one prescribed portion of said control channel resource is exclusively dedicated, said traffic channel request being periodically repeatedly transmitted by said at least one mobile unit;
a detector for determining whether any uplink traffic channel requests have been received and, when an uplink traffic channel request has been detected, assigning a traffic channel to said at least one requesting mobile unit;
a transmitter responsive to a determination that at least one request has been received for transmitting a request response message including said traffic channel assignment to said at least one requesting mobile unit;
wherein said at least one mobile unit and said base station a priori know the location of said prescribed portion of said control channel resource in said control channel, wherein control header information that indicates at least a structure of said control message is not required to be transmitted with said uplink traffic channel requests; and
a utilization apparatus adapted to utilize said received traffic channel request to determine the true value of said received traffic channel request by subtracting an amount of traffic channel resource that has been assigned to said mobile unit that is not known to the mobile unit as being assigned at the time said mobile unit transmitted an uplink traffic channel request from an amount of said traffic channel resource requested in said transmitted uplink traffic channel request.
2. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein said wireless communications base station is for use in an orthogonal frequency division multiplex multiple access wireless communication system.
3. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein said request response message includes a traffic channel assignment for said at least one mobile unit.
4. The apparatus as defined in claim 1 wherein said true value of said traffic channel request is utilized to generate an uplink traffic channel assignment for said at least one mobile unit that transmitted the traffic channel request.
5. The apparatus as defined in claim 4 wherein said uplink traffic channel assignment is based on the transmission rate of data to be transported on said assigned traffic channel.
6. The apparatus as defined in claim 4 wherein said uplink traffic channel assignment is based on the number of frames required to transport data on said assigned traffic channel.
7. Apparatus for use in a wireless mobile communication system comprising:
a plurality of mobile units, wherein each of said mobile units includes
a formatter for formatting a control channel including a prescribed control channel resource having one or more time slots, said control channel being dedicated exclusively to a particular mobile unit and having a prescribed portion of said control channel resource reserved to transport uplink traffic channel requests, wherein each mobile unit has a distinct control channel and contention is eliminated on said uplink;
a transmitter for transmitting said uplink traffic channel requests in said prescribed portion of said control channel resource to a base station;
a receiver to receive a response including an uplink channel assignment from said base station; and
a controller associated with said transmitter to control said transmitting to periodically repeating transmission of said uplink traffic channel request in prescribed one or more of said one or more time slots prior to said particular mobile unit receiving a response from said base station,
wherein said particular mobile unit and said base station a priori know the location of said prescribed portion of said control channel resource in said control channel,
wherein there is no need to include control header information that indicates at least a structure of said control message with said uplink traffic channel requests and latency is minimized in transmitting said uplink traffic channel requests; and
a base station including
a receiver for monitoring at least one prescribed portion of a control channel resource of an incoming control channel to detect an incoming uplink traffic channel request from at least one mobile unit to which said at least one prescribed portion of said control channel resource is exclusively dedicated, said traffic channel request being periodically repeatedly transmitted by said at least one mobile unit
a detector for determining whether any uplink traffic channel requests have been received and, when an uplink traffic channel request has been detected, assigning a traffic channel to said at least one requesting mobile unit,
a transmitter responsive to a determination that at least one request has been received for transmitting a request response message including said traffic channel assignment to said at least one requesting mobile unit,
wherein said at least one mobile unit and said base station a priori know the location of said prescribed portion of said control channel resource in said control channel, wherein control header information is not required to be transmitted with said uplink traffic channel requests, and
a utilization apparatus adapted to utilize said received traffic channel request to determine the true value of said received traffic channel request by subtracting an amount of traffic channel resource that has been assigned to said mobile unit that is not known to the mobile unit as being assigned at the time said mobile unit transmitted an uplink traffic channel request from an amount of said traffic channel resource requested in said transmitted uplink traffic channel request.
8. The system as defined in claim 7 wherein said wireless mobile communication system is an orthogonal frequency division multiplex multiple access wireless mobile communication system.
9. Apparatus for use in a wireless communications base station comprising:
receiver means for monitoring at least one prescribed portion of a control channel resource of an incoming control channel to detect an incoming uplink traffic channel request from at least one mobile unit to which said at least one prescribed portion of said control channel resource is exclusively dedicated, said traffic channel request being periodically repeatedly transmitted by said at least one mobile unit;
means for determining whether any uplink traffic channel requests have been received and, when an uplink traffic channel request has been detected, assigning a traffic channel to said at least one requesting mobile unit;
means responsive to a determination that at least one request has been received for transmitting a request response message including said traffic channel assignment to said at least one requesting mobile unit;
wherein said at least one mobile unit and said base station a priori know the location of said prescribed portion of said control channel resource in said control channel, wherein control header information that indicates at least a structure of said control message is not required to be transmitted with said uplink traffic channel requests; and
means for utilizing said received traffic channel request to determine the true value of said received traffic channel request by subtracting an amount of traffic channel resource that has been assigned to said mobile unit that is not known to the mobile unit as being assigned at the time said mobile unit transmitted an uplink traffic charnel request from an amount of said traffic channel resource requested in said transmitted uplink traffic channel request.
10. The apparatus as defined in claim 9 wherein said request response message includes a traffic channel assignment for said at least one mobile unit.
11. The apparatus as defined in claim 9 wherein said true value of said traffic channel request is utilized to generate a traffic channel assignment for said at least one mobile unit that transmitted the traffic channel request.
12. A method for use in a wireless communications base station comprising the steps of:
monitoring at least one prescribed portion of a control channel resource of an incoming control channel to detect an incoming uplink traffic channel request from at least one mobile unit to which said at least one prescribed portion of said control channel resource is exclusively dedicated, said traffic channel request being periodically repeatedly transmitted by said at least one mobile unit;
determining whether any uplink traffic channel requests have been received and, if an uplink traffic channel request has been detected, assigning a traffic channel to said at least one requesting mobile unit;
in response to a determination that at least one request has been received, transmitting a request response message including said traffic channel assignment to said at least one requesting mobile unit;
wherein said at least one mobile unit and said base station a priori know the location of said prescribed portion of said control channel resource in said control channel, wherein control header information that indicates at least a structure of said control message is not required to be transmitted with said uplink traffic channel requests; and
utilizing said received traffic channel request to determine the true value of said received traffic channel request by subtracting an amount of traffic channel resource that has been assigned to said mobile unit that is not known to the mobile unit as being assigned at the time said mobile unit transmitted an uplink traffic channel request from an amount of said traffic channel resource requested in said transmitted uplink traffic channel request.
13. The method as defined in claim 12 wherein said wireless communications base station is for use in an orthogonal frequency division multiplex multiple access wireless communication system.
14. The method as defined in claim 12 wherein said request response message includes a traffic channel assignment for said at least one mobile unit.
15. The method as defined in claim 12 including a step of utilizing said true value of said traffic channel request to generate a traffic channel assignment for said at least one mobile unit that transmitted the traffic channel request.
16. A method for use in a wireless mobile communication system including a plurality of mobile units and at least one base station comprising the steps of:
in each of said mobile units
generating a control channel including a prescribed control channel resource, said control channel being dedicated exclusively to a particular mobile unit and having a prescribed portion of said control charnel resource reserved to transport uplink traffic channel requests, wherein each mobile unit has a distinct control channel and contention is eliminated on said uplink,
transmitting said uplink traffic channel requests in said prescribed portion of said control channel resource to a base station,
receiving a response including an uplink channel assignment from said base station, and
controlling said transmitting to periodically repeating transmission of said uplink traffic channel request in prescribed one or more of said one or more time slots prior to said particular mobile unit receiving a response from said base station,
wherein said particular mobile unit and said base station a priori know the location of said prescribed portion of said control channel resource in said control channel,
wherein there is no need to include control header information that indicates at least a structure of said control message with said uplink traffic channel requests; and
in said at least one base station
monitoring at least one prescribed portion of a control channel resource of an incoming control channel to detect an incoming uplink traffic channel request from at least one mobile unit to which said at least one prescribed portion of said control channel resource is exclusively dedicated, said traffic channel request being periodically repeatedly transmitted by said at least one mobile unit,
determining whether any uplink traffic channel requests have been received and, if an uplink traffic channel request has been detected, assigning a traffic channel to said at least one requesting mobile unit,
in responsive to a determination that at least one request has been received, transmitting a request response message including said traffic channel assignment to said at least one requesting mobile unit,
wherein said at least one mobile unit and said base station a priori know the location of said prescribed portion of said control channel resource in said control channel, wherein control header information is not required to be transmitted with said uplink traffic channel requests, and
utilizing said received traffic channel request to determine the true value of said received traffic channel request by subtracting an amount of traffic channel resource that has been assigned to said mobile unit that is not known to the mobile unit as being assigned at the time said mobile unit transmitted an uplink traffic channel request from an amount of said traffic channel resource requested in said transmitted uplink traffic channel request.
17. The system as defined in claim 16 wherein said wireless mobile communication system is an orthogonal frequency division multiplex multiple access wireless mobile communication system.
