b. an optional data part containing all the pointers in the group, with the exception of the lowest pointer, and of the highest pointer if a range specification exists.
2. A method of using a computer to compress records in a page by a prefix compression wherein:

records in a page being ordered by key values;
said prefix compression being obtained by identifying a common prefix between the current record to be compressed and the previous record in the page;
said common prefix denoting the number of bytes that are equal in both records, starting with the first byte of each record;
said common prefix being empty if the record to be compressed is the first record in the page;
said prefix compression compressing a record by not explicitly storing the common prefix but representing it by its length in terms of bytes, and
where locating the first record whose key matches a given search key is performed by
a. initially setting a variable P with the first record in the page, comparing the search key with the key in said first record, if the two keys are equal P is returned, whereas if they are not equal, raising a record-not-found condition if the search key is smaller than the key in P, otherwise if the search key is larger than the key in P setting a variable D with the index in the search key, starting at 1, of the first byte that is different between the two keys;
b. perform a forward scan ignoring without decompressing all records with a common prefix equal to or larger than D, stopping said scan with a record-not-found condition when an end-of-scan condition occurs or if the current record has a common prefix smaller than D−1,
c. if the current record has a common prefix equal to D−1, decompressing said record using P as the previous record, setting P with said decompressed record and comparing said search key with the key of the current record, returning P if they are equal, otherwise setting D to the index of the first byte that is different between the two keys and iterating steps b and c.
3. The method of claim 1 where inverted list records on a page are managed by the method in claim 2.
4. The method of claim 1 in which the data part of the representation of a group of N pointers in a group record is a bitmap of length N′, where N′=N−2 if the range specification is present or N′=N−1 otherwise, the i-th bit of said bitmap, where i is larger than or equal to 1 and i is lower than or equal to N′, being set if there exists a pointer in said group of pointers such that its value is equal to the lowest pointer value in the group incremented by i, said representation being called a bitmapped representation.
5. The method of claim 1 in which the data part of the representation of a group of N pointers in a group record is a compressed representation of the group of pointers from which the lowest pointer value is excluded, the highest pointer value being excluded if a range specification is present, said representation being called a compressed representation.

The method of claim 1 further comprising the sequential read of the pointers in an inverted list through a cursor C with a component C.pos identifying the current record in the ordered list of records, and a component C.cont representing a group of pointers in the form <ps, pe>, where C.cont.ps identifies the lowest pointer and C.cont.pe the highest pointer in the group, C.cont being set when the current record identified by C.pos is read and being derived from the interval specification of the current record by setting C.cont.ps to the lowest pointer in the group and C.cont.pe being set to the highest pointer in the group, said highest pointer being either exactly computed from the existing range specification in the group record or estimated, and further characterized by an operation of advancing the cursor to the next pointer wherein:
if the current pointer C.cont.ps is not the last pointer in the current record, C.cont.ps is set to the next pointer in the current record, and C.cont.ps is returned; otherwise
