1. A method of operating a mobile device, the method comprising:
a processor of the mobile device grouping contacts stored on the mobile device, based on information associated with the contacts, the contacts each corresponding to a respective one of a plurality of instant messaging services connectable to the mobile device;
the processor determining a configuration identifier from a message exchanged with an instant messaging server proxy in accordance with a generic instant messaging protocol comprising tag length encoded messages, the configuration identifier defining one of the plurality of instant messaging services;
the processor loading a configuration file for one of the plurality of instant messaging services based on the configuration identifier, the configuration file being one of a plurality of configuration files each addressing a corresponding one of the plurality of instant messaging services;
the processor configuring an instant messaging application and instant messaging user interface according to the configuration file to address an instant messaging server type for the corresponding one of the plurality of instant messaging services;
the processor displaying a contact list in the configured instant messaging user interface comprising a plurality of contact groupings for at least the one of the plurality of instant messaging services, on a display of the mobile device; and
the processor invoking a command upon detecting a selection of one of the contact groups in the contact list interface from an input device for the mobile device, the command associated with a communication with the server proxy via the generic instant messaging protocol.
2. The method of claim 1 wherein the information comprises information that is interpretable by humans.
3. The method of claim 1 wherein the information comprises information that is interpretable by a program.
4. The method of claim 1 wherein the information comprises location information.
5. The method of claim 1 wherein a grouping based on the information comprises a group ID.
6. The method of claim 1 wherein the grouping based on the information comprises a group name.
7. The method of claim 1 wherein the instant messaging user interface is part of a client application.
8. The method of claim 1 wherein the command comprises an instant messaging conversation.
9. The method of claim 1 wherein the command comprises a multiple participant conversation.
10. The method of claim 1 wherein the information is received from another mobile device.
11. The method of claim 1 wherein the information is received from a server.
12. The method of claim 1 wherein the grouping contacts comprises the processor removing a member from a grouping based on a presence of the member.
13. A mobile device comprising:
a display; and
a processor electrically coupled to the display, the processor configured to:
group contacts stored on the mobile device, based on information associated with the contacts, the contacts each corresponding to a respective one of a plurality of instant messaging services connectable to the mobile device;
determine a configuration identifier from a message exchanged with an instant messaging server proxy in accordance with a generic instant messaging protocol comprising tag length encoded messages, the configuration identifier defining one of the plurality of instant messaging services;
load a configuration file for one of the plurality of instant messaging services based on the configuration identifier, the configuration file being one of a plurality of configuration files each addressing a corresponding one of the plurality of instant messaging services;
configure an instant messaging application and instant messaging user interface according to the configuration file to address an instant messaging server type for the corresponding one of the plurality of instant messaging services;
display a contact list in the configured instant messaging user interface comprising a plurality of contact groupings for at least the one of the plurality of instant messaging services, on a display of the mobile device; and
invoke a command upon detecting a selection of one of the contact groups in the contact list interface from an input device for the mobile device, the command associated with a communication with the server proxy via the generic instant messaging protocol.
14. The mobile device of claim 13 wherein the information comprises information that is interpretable by humans.
15. The mobile device of claim 13 wherein the information comprises information that is interpretable by a program.
16. The mobile device of claim 13 wherein the information comprises location information.
17. The mobile device of claim 13 wherein a grouping based on the information comprises a group ID.

25. A non-transitory computer readable medium, comprising computer executable instructions for:
a processor of a mobile device grouping contacts stored on the mobile device, based on information associated with the contacts, the contacts each corresponding to a respective one of a plurality of instant messaging services connectable to the mobile device;
the processor determining a configuration identifier from a message exchanged with an instant messaging server proxy in accordance with a generic instant messaging protocol comprising tag length encoded messages, the configuration identifier defining one of the plurality of instant messaging services;
the processor loading a configuration file for one of the plurality of instant messaging services based on the configuration identifier, the configuration file being one of a plurality of configuration files each addressing a corresponding one of the plurality of instant messaging services;
the processor configuring an instant messaging application and instant messaging user interface according to the configuration file to address an instant messaging server type for the corresponding one of the plurality of instant messaging services;
the processor displaying a contact list in the configured instant messaging user interface comprising a plurality of contact groupings for at least the one of the plurality of instant messaging services, on a display of the mobile device; and
the processor invoking a command upon detecting a selection of one of the contact groups in the contact list interface from an input device for the mobile device, the command associated with a communication with the server proxy via the generic instant messaging protocol.
26. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 25 wherein the information comprises information that is interpretable by humans.
27. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 25 wherein the information comprises information that is interpretable by a program.
28. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 25 wherein the information comprises location information.

I claim:

1. A surgical instrument comprising:
a hollow shaft having an inner passage;
a working piece at the distal end of said shaft;
a movable member pivotally mounted on said shaft in cooperative relationship to said working piece;
a connecting element extending along the shaft inner passage having one end exiting thorough an opening in said shaft and connected to said movable member; and
an actuating member connected to said connecting element which upon actuation pushes and pulls on said connecting element to move said movable member toward and away from said working piece.
2. A surgical instrument as in claim 1 wherein each of said working piece and said movable member comprises a cutting implement.
3. A surgical instrument as in claim 1 wherein said movable member comprises a pair of spaced arms.
4. A surgical instrument as in claim 3 wherein said pair of arms form a clamp to hold an object between said clamp and said working piece.
5. A surgical instrument as in claim 3 wherein said working piece has a cutting edge and said pair of arms have cutting edges in opposition to said working piece cutting edge.
6. A surgical instrument as in claim 3 further comprising a cross-piece connecting said arms.
7. A surgical instrument as in claim 6 wherein said one end of said connecting element is connected to said cross-piece to move said movable member.
8. A surgical instrument as in claim 1 further comprising an ultrasonic transducer to produce vibratory mechanical energy along said shaft to vibrate said working piece.
9. A surgical instrument as in claim 8 wherein the energy along said shaft has a pattern with at least one nodal point of reduced energy, said moving member being pivotally mounted to said shaft at a said nodal point.
10. An ultrasonic instrument as in claim 8 wherein the energy along said shaft has a pattern with at least one nodal point of reduced energy, said opening for the exit of said connecting element one end from said shaft inner passage is at a said nodal point.
11. An ultrasonic instrument as in claim 8 wherein the energy along said shaft has a pattern with at least one nodal point of reduced energy, said moving member being pivotally mounted to said shaft at a said nodal point and said opening for the exit of said connecting element one end from said shaft inner passage is at a said nodal point.
12. An ultrasonic surgical instrument as in claim 11 wherein said moving member pivotal mounting and said opening for the exit of said connecting element one end from said shaft inner passage are at the same nodal point.
13. An ultrasonic surgical instrument as in claim 8 wherein each of said working piece and said movable member comprises a cutting implement, said working piece being vibrated relative to said movable member.
14. An ultrasonic surgical instrument as in claim 8 wherein said movable member comprises a pair of spaced arms.
15. An ultrasonic surgical instrument as in claim 14 wherein said pair of arms form a clamp to hold an object between said clamp and said vibrating working piece.
16. An ultrasonic surgical instrument as in claim 14 wherein said vibrating working piece has a cutting edge and said pair of arms have cutting edges in opposition to said working piece cutting edge.
17. An ultrasonic surgical instrument as in claim 14 further comprising a cross-piece connecting said pair of arms.
18. An ultrasonic surgical instrument as in claim 17 wherein said one end of said connecting element is connected to said cross-piece to move said movable member.
19. An ultrasonic instrument as in claim 8 further comprising an extension piece connected to said shaft at said nodal point and extending toward the proximal end of said shaft, said movable member being pivotally mounted to said extension piece.
20. A surgical instrument comprising:
a hollow shaft having an inner passage;
a head having a plurality of working implements mounted therearound;
a rotatable mount connecting said head to an end of said shaft;
a connecting element extending along the shaft inner passage having one end connected to actuate said rotatable mount; and
an actuating member connected to said connecting element which upon actuation pushes and pulls on said connecting element to actuate said mount to rotate said head to rotate said working implements relative to said shaft.
21. A surgical instrument as in claim 20 and further comprising an ultrasonic transducer to produce mechanical energy along said shaft to vibrate said head and the working implements thereon.
22. A surgical instrument as in claim 20 further comprising a protective cover over said head to expose a selected one of said working implements into an operative position upon rotation by said head.
23. A surgical instrument comprising:
a hollow shaft having an inner passage;
a plurality of working implements pivotally mounted in said passage at the distal end of said shaft, said shaft distal end having an opening through which a said working implement can project; and
a plurality of connecting elements extending along the shaft inner passage, each said connecting element connected to a selected one of said working implements, actuation of a connecting element moving the connected working implement to project through said shaft opening to a position external of said shaft.
24. A surgical instrument as in claim 23 and further comprising an ultrasonic transducer to produce mechanical energy along said shaft to vibrate said working implements.
