1. A method of personalizing an interface of a portable electronic device comprising the steps of:
interfacing the portable electronic device to a workstation;
retrieving an existing version of a user interface from the portable electronic device;
modifying the existing version of a user interface so as to define a personalized version of said user interface;
transferring information defining said personalized version of said user interface from said workstation to the portable electronic device; and
implementing said personalized version of said user interface on the portable electronic device.
2. The method according to claim 1 further including the steps of:
displaying on said workstation an indication of features implemented by said existing version of said user interface.
3. The method according to claim 2 wherein said step of displaying includes providing a graphical depiction of a simulation of said current version of said user interface on said workstation.
4. The method according to claim 2 further including the steps of:
transferring information defining said existing version of said user interface resident on the portable electronic device from the portable electronic device to said workstation.
5. The method according to claim 1 further including executing a interface personalization program specific to the portable electronic device on said workstation.
6. The method according to claim 1 wherein said step of modifying includes providing a (i) providing a graphical depiction of said current version of said user interface on said workstation, (ii) providing a menu of selectable features for possible inclusion in said personalized version of said user interface, and (iii) incorporating selected ones of said features into said personalized version of said user interface.
7. The method according to claim 1 wherein said step of modifying includes a step selected from the group comprising (i) adding a new feature to said existing version of said user interface, (ii) deleting an existing feature from said existing version of said user interface, and (iii) modifying an existing feature of said existing version of said user interface.
8. The method according to claim 1 wherein said user interface comprises a graphical user interface including a plurality of displayable icons associated with respective selectable features implemented by the portable electronic device.
9. A portable electronic device for performing a dedicated function, comprising:
a portable housing;
a display mounted to said housing;
an input device mounted to said housing for accepting a manual input;
a memory storing a set of program instructions for performing said dedicated function and configuration code defining a user interface;
a processor connected to said memory to execute said set of program instructions and responsive to said configuration code for implementing said user interface; and
a communications interface configured to receive said configuration code for storage in said memory.
10. The portable electronic device according to claim 9 wherein said configuration code includes a designation of a recipient of an output of said portable electronic device.
11. The portable electronic device according to claim 9 wherein said configuration code includes an e-mail address and associated label of a potential recipient of an output of said portable electronic device.
12. The portable electronic device according to claim 9 wherein said configuration code includes information for generating a display comprising a plurality of selectable icons.
13. The portable electronic device according to claim 9 wherein said input device comprises a plurality of manually operable electrical switches.
14. The portable electronic device according to claim 9 further comprising an optical system forming an image and an imager device responsive to said optical image and operable to store an electronic representation of said optical image in said memory.
15. The portable electronic device according to claim 9 wherein said configuration code includes a designation of a plurality of image processing functions and a definition of displayable icons associated with respective ones of said image processing functions.
16. The portable electronic device according to claim 9 wherein said configuration code includes menu data defining a hierarchical control system for operating said portable electronic device.
17. The portable electronic device according to claim 16 further comprising an optical system forming an image and an imager device responsive to said optical image and operable to store an electronic representation of said optical image in said memory, said control system including digital camera image processing controls and image destination designations.
18. A digital camera comprising:
an optical system for forming an optical image;
an image conversion system responsive to said optical image for storing image data;
a user interface configured to direct a processing of said image data; and
a communications interface for receiving user definition data for configuring an operation of said user interface.
19. The digital camera according to claim 18 further comprising a processor responsive to said definition data for generating said user interface, said user interface including a display and related input devices, said display including a plurality of displayable icons designating a function of ones of said input devices.
20. The digital camera according to claim 18, said user interface including a display of an e-mail transmission method of transmitting said image data to a designated e-mail address.
21. The digital camera according to claim 18 further comprising:
a portable housing configured to be held by a person operating said digital camera;
a memory storing said image data and said user definition data;
a display attached to said housing and connected to said memory for displaying (i) an image formed by said image data and (ii) a control menu defined by said user definition data, said control menu including a designation of functions for processing said image data.
22. The digital camera according to claim 21 wherein said functions for processing said image data are selected from the set consisting of (i) delete said image data, (ii) magnify a display of said image data, (iii) rotate a display of said image data, (iv) print a copy of an image formed by said image data, (v) send a copy of said image data to a designated recipient, (vi) incorporate said image data into an album page, and (vii) transmit said image data to an electronic picture frame.
23. A method of sending electronic images to a recipient comprising the steps of:
receiving an e-mail address associated with the recipient;
transferring a designation of said recipient to an image capture device;
capturing an optical image;
transforming said optical image into electronic image data;
displaying said designation of said recipient on said image capture device;
selecting said recipient on said image capture device to receive said electronic image data; and
initiating a transmission of said electronic image data to said e-mail address.
24. The method according to claim 23 wherein said step of receiving an e-mail includes the steps of:
executing a setup program on a computer; and
adding an e-mail item corresponding to said e-mail address to a share menu using said setup program.
25. The method according to claim 23 wherein said step of transferring includes a step of updating a share menu on said image capture device.
26. The method according to claim 25 wherein said share menu includes a display for selecting a destination of said electronic image data from among (i) said e-mail address, (ii) at least one other e-mail address, and (iii) a printer.
27. The method according to claim 23 wherein said step of initiating a transmission of said electronic image data to said e-mail address includes the steps of:
interfacing said image capture device to a computer;
transferring said electronic image data and a designation of said recipient to said computer; and
transferring said electronic image data and said designation of said recipient from said computer to a SMTP server.
28. The method according to claim 23 wherein said step of transforming includes a step of compressing said electronic image data using a lossy compression technique.
29. The method according to claim 23 further comprising the step of initiating a transmission of information from said image capture device about an initial configuration of said share menu for use by said setup program.
30. A setup program for configuring a user interface of an portable electronic device including a computer usable medium having computer readable program code embodied therein for configuring the user interface, the computer readable program codes comprising:
computer readable program code for causing a computer to display a menu of selections to be included in the user interface;
computer readable program code for causing a computer to respond to a user designating at least one of said selections to be included in the user interface;
computer readable program code for causing a computer to generate configuration data enabling said user interface including said at least one of said selections; and
computer readable program code for causing a computer to upload said configuration code to the portable electronic device.
31. The setup program according to claim 30 wherein said portable electronic device comprises a digital camera and said at least one of said selections comprises a sharing option designating an e-mail recipient of electronic image data generated by said digital camera.
32. The setup program according to claim 30 further comprising computer readable program code for downloading said configuration code from said portable electronic device to said computer and computer readable program code for displaying a ones of said selections implemented by said configuration code downloaded from said portable electronic device.
33. A digital camera comprising:
means for forming an optical image;
means responsive to said optical image for storing image data;
means directing a processing of said image data; and
means for receiving user definition data for configuring an operation of said user interface.

1. An electronic device comprising:
a support;
an electronic component supported by the support;
a first layer substantially encasing, and in direct physical contact with, all exposed surfaces of the electronic component; and
a second layer substantially encasing, and in direct physical contact with, all exposed surfaces of the first layer, the second layer also substantially encasing, and in direct physical contact with, all exposed surfaces of that portion of the support that is supporting the electronic component,
wherein the first layer comprises a first material that does not have any filler particles embedded therein and that is more flexible than the second layer thereby creating a mechanical buffer layer between the second layer and the electronic component such that the electronic component is protected from thermal expansion of the second portion caused by changes in temperature, the second layer comprises a second material having filler particles embedded therein, the filler particles have different thermal expansion characteristics than the first material for reducing overall expansion of the second layer in response to increase in temperature, the filler particles have a modulus of elasticity that is different from the first material, and the filler particles cause scattering of an optical signal transmitted through the second layer.
2. An electronic device according to claim 1, further comprising:
electrical leads electrically coupled to the electronic component and at least partially encased by the first layer to create a mechanical buffer between the electrical leads such that the electrical leads are protected from thermal expansion of the second layer caused by changes in temperature; and
a ceramic piece mounted between the support and the electronic component.
3. An electronic device according to claim 1, the electronic component further comprising:
an oxide channel for producing an optical emission.
4. An electronic device according to claim 1, wherein the support is a leadframe or a substrate, and wherein the electronic component is one of: an optical receiver, an optical transmitter, a laser, a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL), a sensor, a capacitor, a photodiode, or a silicon chip.
5. An electronic device according to claim 4, wherein:
the electronic component is a VCSEL and the support is a leadframe;
the VCSEL is die attached to a top surface of the leadframe that is directly opposite from and substantially parallel to a bottom surface of the leadframe; and
the second layer substantially encases, and is in direct physical contact with, the portion of the bottom surface of the leadframe that is directly opposite from the VCSEL.
6. An electronic device according to claim 5, wherein the second layer substantially encases, and is in direct physical contact with, all of the bottom surface of the leadframe that is directly opposite from a portion of the top surface of the leadframe that is covered by the first layer.
7. An electronic device according to claim 1, wherein the first material comprises silicone.
8. An electronic device according to claim 1, wherein the first material comprises an elastomer material and the second material comprises a plastic material.
9. An electronic device according to claim 1, wherein the filler material is glass and the rest of the second layer is a B-staged epoxy.
10. An electronic device according to claim 1, wherein the first layer comprises a dye for visually accentuating cracks in the electronic device, wherein the dye is at least partially translucent allowing for optical communication of optical signals through the first layer with the electronic component.
11. An electronic device according to claim 10, wherein the first layer has a refractive index of about 1.4 and the second layer has a refractive index of about 1.55.
12. An electronic device according to claim 1, wherein the electronic component is an optical transmitter, the first layer and second layer are at least partially transparent allowing for transmission of an optical emission from the optical transmitter through the first and second layers, and wherein the first layer has a lower index of refraction than the second layer.
13. An electronic device according to claim 1, wherein the second material comprises plastic so as to protect the electronic component from different environments including both dry and humid environments.
14. An electronic device according to claim 1, wherein the second layer is produced by an injection molding process, a transfer molding process, or a pour molding process.
