1. A seed comprising at least one set of the chromosomes of maize inbred line PHC77, representative seed of said line having been deposited under ATCC Accession Number PTA-7028, wherein said chromosomes comprise all of the alleles of inbred line PHC77 at the SSR loci listed in Table 2.
2. A maize plant produced by growing the maize seed of claim 1.
3. A plant part of the maize plant of claim 2.
4. A method for developing maize seed, said method comprising crossing the plant of claim 2 with a different maize plant.
5. A method for developing a second maize plant in a maize plant breeding program, said method comprising applying plant breeding techniques to a first maize plant, or parts thereof, wherein said first maize plant is the maize plant of claim 2, and wherein application of said techniques results in development of said second maize plant.

1. A liquid-crystal display device comprising:
a liquid-crystal panel including
a pair of substrates,
a liquid-crystal layer held in sandwiched form between the pair of substrates, and
a group of electrodes formed on at least a counterpart of the pair of substrates for applying an electric field to the liquid-crystal layer;
a pair of polarizers disposed on a pair of substrates; and
a light source unit disposed outside the pair of substrates;
wherein the liquid-crystal layer includes a liquid-crystal material having an ordinary-light refractive index of at least 1.46, but up to 1.49, an extraordinary-light refractive index of at least 1.54, but up to 1.59, and a mean photoelastic constant of at least 8, but up to 25, and exhibiting a nematic phase.
2. The liquid-crystal display device according to claim 1, wherein a retardation obtained by multiplying birefringence of the liquid-crystal material and thickness of the liquid-crystal layer is at least 0.32, but up to 0.40.
3. The liquid-crystal display device according to claim 1, wherein the mean elastic constant of the liquid-crystal material is at least 9, but up to 20.
4. The liquid-crystal display device according to claim 1, wherein the liquid-crystal layer is formed upon an optical sheet formed at the uppermost section of the light source unit.
5. The liquid-crystal display device according to claim 1, wherein a grayscale contrast ratio expressed as a ratio between a relative luminance level of 5% of maximum display luminance and a minimum luminance level is at least 50:1.
6. The liquid-crystal display device according to claim 1, wherein a grayscale contrast ratio expressed as a ratio between a relative luminance level of 4% of maximum display luminance and a minimum luminance level is at least 50:1.
7. The liquid-crystal display device according to claim 1, wherein a grayscale contrast ratio expressed as a ratio between a relative luminance level of 5% of maximum display luminance and a minimum luminance level is at least 50:1 within a vertical angle range of 33 degrees with respect to a horizontal direction of the panel.
8. The liquid-crystal display device according to claim 1, wherein a grayscale contrast ratio expressed as a ratio between a relative luminance level of 4% of maximum display luminance and a minimum luminance level is at least within a vertical angle range of 33 degrees with respect to a horizontal direction of the panel.
