We claim:
1. A system for receiving pages comprising:
storage unit for storing first receive samples;
enhanced searcher for detecting the correlation energy of a pilot channel and for demodulating a first paging channel within said first receive samples; and
demodulation element for demodulating a second paging channel within other receive samples.
2. The system as set forth in claim 1 further comprising:
decoder for decoding soft decision data from said demodulation element.
3. The system as set forth in claim 1 further comprising:
Rf unit for generating said receive samples.
4. The system as set forth in claim 1 further comprising:
control unit for activating said searcher during quick page slots, and for activating said demodulation unit during full paging slots when a quick page message is received.
5. The system as set forth in claim 1 wherein said combined searcher is comprised of:
first processing element for despreading a pilot channel;
second processing element for despreading said pilot channel and for despreading said first paging channel;
phase adjustment demodulation circuit for rotating said first paging channel data using said using pilot channel from said first processing element;
correlation energy circuit for calculating correlation energy for said second processing element.
6. The system of claim 5 where the phase adjustment circuit is a two-dimensional vector dot product or cross product between data and pilot complex baseband signals.
7. The system as set forth in claim 1 further comprising:
combiner circuit for diversity combining demodulated data, wherein said searcher performs multiple demodulations within said stored data for said first paging channel, and said combiner combines soft decision data from said multiple demodulations.
8. The system of claim 7 where said combiner is comprised of an accumulator.
9. The method as set forth in claim 7 wherein said searching step is comprised of the steps of:
searching a pilot channel;
despreading said pilot channel;
despreading said first paging channel;
demodulating said first paging channel by projecting said first paging channel despread data onto said pilot channel despread data.
10. The method as set forth in claim 7 wherein said searching step is comprised of the steps of:
demodulating a pilot channel;
demodulating said pilot channel;
demodulating said first paging channel;
calculating correlation energy from pilot channel data;
projecting first paging channel data using pilot channel data;
calculating a correlation energy for said pilot information channel data.
11. The method as set forth in claim 7 further comprising the steps of:
accumulating demodulated data, wherein multiple demodulations within said stored data for said first paging channel are performed, and said accumulation step accumulates soft decision data from said multiple demodulations.

1. A method for treating or preventing the onset of preterm labor and subsequent preterm birth in a pregnant woman with a short cervix comprising:
determining to treat or prevent short cervix in a pregnant woman in order to maintain or prolong gestation; and
administering an effective amount of a formulation containing progesterone sufficient to prolong gestation by minimizing the shortening or effacing of the cervix.
2. The method of claim 1, wherein the method further comprises monitoring or confirming the reduction in cervical shortening or effacement after the administration of said progesterone.
3. The method of claim 1, wherein the formulation is administered vaginally and is:
a) in the form of a gel, cream, suppository, or solid dosage form; or
b) is released by a suitable delivery device.
4. The method of claim 1, wherein the progesterone comprises one or more of the following: a natural progesterone, a metabolite or progesterone, or a synthetic progesterone.
5. The claim 4, wherein the progesterone is natural progesterone.
6. The claim 5, wherein said natural progesterone is administered vaginally.
7. The method of claim 4, wherein the progesterone comprises on or more synthetic progesterones.
8. The method of claim 7, wherein said synthetic progesterone is administered vaginally.
9. The method of claim 7, wherein said synthetic progesterone is selected from a group consisting of one or more of the following: medroxyprogesterone acetate, norethindrone, norethindrone acetate, norethindrone enanthate, desogestrel, leveonorgestrel, lynestrenol, ethynodiol diacetate, norgestrel, norgestimate, norethynodrel, gestodene, drospirenone, trimegestone, levodesogestrel, gestodyne, nesterone, etonogestrel, and derivatives from 19-nor-testosterone.
10. The method of claim 1, wherein said progesterone is administered daily beginning about the 18th to 22nd week of gestation until about the 37th week of gestation.
11. The method of claim 1, wherein the amount of progesterone that is administered is between about 45 mg and 800 mg.
12. The method of claim 1, wherein the progesterone is administered via a drug delivery system that comprises progesterone, a water-soluble, water-swellable cross-linked polycarboxylic acid polymer, and at least one adjuvant.
13. The method of claim 1, wherein the progesterone is administered to a pregnant woman whose cervix has a length between 1.0 cm and 8.0 cm.
14. The method of claim 1, wherein the progesterone is administered to a pregnant woman whose cervix has a length between 1.0 cm and 3.0 cm.
15. The method of claim 1, wherein the progesterone is administered to a pregnant woman whose cervix has a length between 1.0 cm and 2.5 cm.
16. The method of claim 1, wherein the progesterone comprises both natural progesterone and 17-alpha-hyroxyprogesterone caproate.
17. The method of claim 16, wherein the progesterone is administered for about 21 weeks.
18. The method of claim 16, wherein the progesterone is administered beginning about the 2nd to 4th week of gestation.
19. The method of claim 11, wherein the progesterone is administered as early as gestation.
20. The method of claim 11, wherein the amount of progesterone that is administered is about 90 mg and the progesterone is natural progesterone administered vaginally.
