1. A digital data storing method comprising the steps of:
encrypting part of digital data; and
storing the encrypted part of the digital data and non-encrypted remainder of the digital data.
2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the data part to be encrypted is sufficiently smaller in size than the digital data.
3. The method according to claim 1, further comprising the step of dividing the digital data into blocks each of a predetermined data size,
part of each of the digital data blocks being encrypted to provide encrypted digital data.
4. The method according to claim 1, wherein information indicative of the position of the encrypted digital data is stored along with the encrypted digital data and non-encrypted digital data.
5. The method according to claim 4, wherein:
the information indicative of the position of the digital data is encrypted; and
the encrypted positional information is stored along with the encrypted digital data and non-encrypted digital data.
6. A data storing device comprising:
an encrypting means for encrypting part of digital data; and
a storing means for storing the digital data encrypted by the encrypting means and non-encrypted remainder of the digital data.
7. The device according to claim 6, wherein the data part to be encrypted by the encrypting means is sufficiently smaller in size than the digital data.
8. The device according to claim 6, further comprising a dividing means for dividing the digital data into blocks each of a predetermined data size,
part of each of the digital data blocks being encrypted to provide encrypted digital data.
9. The device according to claim 6, wherein the storing means stores information indicative of the position of the encrypted digital data along with the encrypted digital data and non-encrypted digital data.
10. Device according to claim 9, further comprising a second encrypting means for encrypting the information indicative of the position of the encrypted digital data to provide encrypted positional information,
the encrypted positional information provided by the second encrypting means being stored along with the encrypted digital and non-encrypted digital data.
11. A digital-data recording medium having recorded therein encrypted digital data resulted from encryption of part of digital data and non-encrypted remainder of the digital data.
12. The medium according to claim 11, wherein the encrypted part of the digital data is sufficiently smaller in size than the digital data.
13. The medium according to claim 11, wherein:
the digital data is divided into blocks each of a predetermined data size; and
digital data resulted from encryption of part of each of the digital data blocks is recorded.
14. The medium according to claim 11, wherein information indicative of the position of the encrypted digital data is recorded along with the encrypted digital data and non-encrypted digital data.
15. The medium according to claim 14, wherein:
the information indicative of the position of the encrypted digital data is encrypted; and
the encrypted positional information is stored along with the encrypted digital data and non-encrypted digital data.
16. A data reproducing method comprising the steps of:
acquiring digital data including encrypted digital data and non-encrypted digital data;
extracting the encrypted digital data from the digital data and decrypting the encrypted digital data; and
outputting, as read data, the decrypted digital data and the non-encrypted digital data extracted from the digital data.
17. The method according to claim 16, wherein:
the digital data includes the encrypted digital data and non-encrypted digital data in each of the blocks having the predetermined data size; and
the encrypted digital data is extracted from each of the blocks having the predetermined data size and the extracted encrypted digital data is decrypted.
18. The method according to claim 16, wherein:
information indicative of the encrypted digital data is acquired along with the digital data; and
the encrypted digital data is extracted based on the acquired positional information and decrypted.
19. The method according to claim 18, wherein:
the information indicative of the position of the encrypted digital data is encrypted;
the encrypted positional information is acquired along with the digital data;
the encrypted positional information is decrypted; and
the encrypted digital data is extracted based on the decrypted information indicative of the position of the encrypted digital data and decrypted.
20. A data reproducing device comprising:
an input means for inputting digital data including encrypted digital data and non-encrypted digital data;
a decrypting means for extracting the encrypted digital data from the digital data supplied from the input means and decrypting the extracted encrypted digital data; and
a reproducing means for outputting, as read data, the digital data decrypted by the decrypting means and non-encrypted digital data extracted from the digital data.
21. The device according to claim 20, wherein:
the digital data includes the encrypted digital data and non-encrypted digital data in each of the blocks having the predetermined data size; and
the decrypting means extracts the encrypted digital data from each of the blocks having the predetermined data size and decrypts the extracted encrypted digital data.
22. The device according to claim 20, wherein:
the input means acquires the information indicative of the position of the encrypted digital data along with the digital data; and
the decrypting means extracts the encrypted digital data based on the extracted positional information and decrypts the extracted encrypted digital data.
23. The device according to claim 22, further including a second decrypting means for decrypting encrypted information indicative of the position of the encrypted digital data,
the input means acquiring the encrypted positional information along with the digital data; and
the decrypting means extracting the encrypted digital data on the basis of the information indicative of the position of the encrypted digital data decrypted by the second decrypting means and decrypting the encrypted digital data.

20. An entertainment system, comprising:
an electronic game library including plural games stored on a mass storage device;
multiple game engines coupled to an interactive distribution network to which multiple user devices may also be coupled, each user device remotely located from the electronic game library and the multiple game servers; and
a controller configured to receive a game selection from one of the user devices via the interactive distribution network and to assign one of the game engines to execute a game from the game library selected by the one user device,
wherein the assigned game engine is configured to receive a portion of the selected game stored in the electronic game library, provide game play signals corresponding to the received game portion to the one user device over the interactive distribution network, and receive game player control signals from the one user device in response to the provided game play signals over the interactive distribution network with sufficient speed to permit the one user to play the selected game substantially in real time.
21. The entertainment system in claim 20, wherein the controller and the game engines are located at a head-end of the interactive distribution network.
22. The entertainment system in claim 21, wherein the head-end includes a cable television head-end that also distributes television content to cable television subscribers and the interactive distribution network includes a cable television distribution network.
23. The entertainment system in claim 20, wherein the interactive distribution network includes the Internet, a fiber optic network, or digital subscriber links (DSL).
24. The entertainment system in claim 20, wherein the controller includes a content server configured to receive a game update or a new game and to store the game update or the new game in the electronic game library in the mass storage device.

The entertainment system in claim 24, wherein the content server is capable of storing the game update or the new game in the game library of the mass storage device at the same time that the assigned game engine is accessing a portion of the selected game stored in the game library without interrupting the one user’s game play.
26. The entertainment system in claim 20, wherein the selected game engine is configured not to download the entire selected game but only a portion of the selected game as needed.
27. The entertainment system in claim 20, wherein the accessed portion of the selected game includes sufficient game play information to permit interactive, substantially real time game play at the one user device.
28. The entertainment system in claim 20, wherein the game engines are part of an interactive multiplexed game server configured to provide plural, substantially real time, parallel game execution sessions for different users.
29. The entertainment system in claim 28, wherein the interactive game server is configured to provide plural, substantially real time, parallel game execution sessions of different games.
30. The entertainment system in claim 28, wherein the interactive game server is configured to provide plural, substantially real time, parallel game execution sessions of the same game.
31. The entertainment system in claim 28, wherein the interactive game server is configured to provide head-to-head play between users at remote locations so that the users can control the same game and play against one another or otherwise participate in the same game play experience.
32. The entertainment system in claim 31, wherein the controller is configured to provide a matchmaking service for different users interested in finding gaming partners to play against.
33. The entertainment system in claim 28, wherein the interactive game server includes:
interface logic coupled to the content server and the mass storage device;
plural buffers, coupled to the interface logic, for storing audio and video information retrieved from a selected game in the game library; and
plural game engines, each game engine configure to request and receive from a corresponding buffer audio and video information used to provide game play signals to a user device via the interactive distribution network.
34. The entertainment system in claim 33, wherein the game engines are modified conventional home video game players.
35. The entertainment system in claim 20, wherein the selected game stored in the game library is encrypted, and the assigned game engine is configured to at least partially decrypt the encrypted selected game and provide substantially real time interactive game play to the user via the interactive distribution network.
36. The entertainment system in claim 20, wherein the controller is configured to save game play data resulting from the user’s game play to permit retrieval by the user for subsequent game play.
37. The entertainment system in claim 20, wherein the one user device includes a personal computer.
38. The entertainment system in claim 20, wherein the one user device includes a display and one or more user input devices for generating game play control signals routed back to the assigned game engine over the interactive distribution network.

The entertainment system in claim 38, wherein the display is a television and the one or more user input devices includes a handheld game controller used to select a game for play communicated to the controller and to generate game play control signals during game play communicated to the assigned game engine via the interactive distribution network.

The entertainment system in claim 37, wherein the interactive distribution network includes a cable television distribution network and the user device includes a cable television set top box, a handheld game controller for generating game play control signals during game play communicated to the game engine via the set top box and the interactive distribution network, and a television-related controller for selecting a game for play communicated to the controller via the set top box and the interactive distribution network.
41. The entertainment system in claim 37, wherein the user input data is formatted in data packets, each packet including a header, a user identifier, and controller data, and wherein the user identifier is used to route packets to the assigned game engine.
42. The entertainment system in claim 41, wherein packets from different users playing a multi-player game may be routed to the same game engine.
43. The entertainment system in claim 41, wherein interactive distribution network includes a cable television distribution network and the user device includes a cable television set top box, a handheld game controller for generating control signals during game play communicated to the game engine via the set top box and the interactive distribution network, and wherein the set top box is configured to packetize the game controller control signals and transmit resulting packets over the cable television distribution network back to the controller or to the assigned game engine.
44. The entertainment system in claim 41, wherein the controller or the assigned game engine is configured to record billing information for game play using the user identifier.
45. A cable TV head-end for providing entertainment, comprising:
a game library including plural games stored on a mass storage device;
multiple game engines coupled to a cable TV distribution network to communicate with multiple user devices via respective cable TV interface circuitry associated with each user device, wherein the user devices are located remotely from the cable TV head-end;
a controller configured to receive a game selection from one of the user devices via the cable TV distribution network and to assign one of the game engines to execute a game from the game library selected by the one user device,
wherein the assigned game engine is configured to access a portion of the selected game stored in the game library, provide resulting game play signals to the one user device over the cable TV network, and receive game player control signals from the one user device in response to the provided game play signals over the cable TV network with sufficient speed to permit the one user to play the selected game substantially in real time.
46. The cable TV entertainment head-end in claim 45, wherein the assigned game engine distributes audio and video content from the selected game portion to the user via the cable TV network.
47. The cable TV entertainment head-end in claim 46, wherein the audio and video content is controlled by input signals generated by the one user device delivered to the cable TV entertainment head-end via the cable TV network.
48. The cable TV entertainment head-end in claim 47, wherein the audio and video content and the input signals are sent over the cable TV network as packets.
49. The cable TV entertainment head-end in claim 45, wherein the accessed portion of the selected game includes sufficient game play information to permit interactive, substantially real time game play.
50. The cable TV entertainment head-end in claim 45, wherein the game engines are part of an interactive multiplexed game server configured to provide plural, substantially real time, parallel game execution sessions for different users.
51. The cable TV entertainment head-end in claim 50, wherein the interactive game server is configured to provide head-to-head play between users at remote locations so that the users can control the same game and play against one another or otherwise participate in the same game play experience.
52. A method for a multi-user electronic game playing arrangement including an electronic game library including plural games stored on a mass storage device and multiple game engines coupled to the mass storage device and to an interactive distribution network to which multiple, remotely-located user devices may also be coupled, comprising:
receiving a game selection from one of the user devices via the interactive distribution network;
assigning one of the game engines to execute a game from the game library selected by the one user device;
receiving at the assigned game engine a portion of the selected game stored in the electronic game library;
providing from the assigned game engine game play signals corresponding to the received game portion to the one user device over the interactive distribution network; and
receiving at the assigned game engine game player control signals from the one user device in response to the provided game play signals over the interactive distribution network with sufficient speed to permit the one user to play the selected game substantially in real time.
53. The method in claim 52, wherein the selected game engine does not to download the entire selected game but only a portion of the selected game as needed.
54. The method in claim 52, wherein the accessed portion of the selected game includes sufficient game play information to permit interactive, substantially real time game play at the one user device.
55. The method in claim 52, further comprising:
providing plural, substantially real time, parallel game execution sessions of the same game.
56. The method in claim 52, further comprising:
providing head-to-head play between users at remote locations so that the users can control the same game and play against one another or otherwise participate in the same game play experience.
57. The entertainment system in claim 20, wherein the assigned game engine is configured to only receive a portion of game program code just before the assigned video game engine requires that portion to continue with game play.

The entertainment system in claim 33, wherein the interactive game server includes a processor for polling plural game engines currently executing game instructions for requests to transfer additional game program instructions and scheduling transfer of additional game program instructions during different time intervals for different ones of said plural game engines in response to said requests.
59. The entertainment system in claim 33, wherein each corresponding buffer can only store a portion of code for an associated game program.
60. The entertainment system in claim 20, wherein the controller is configured to interleave transfers of additional portions of games corresponding to the multiple game engines while each of the multiple game engines is executing previously-transferred game portions.
61. The cable TV network entertainment head-end in claim 45, wherein the assigned game engine is configured to only receive a portion of game program code just before the assigned video game engine requires that portion to continue with game play.

The cable TV network entertainment head-end in claim 45, wherein the controller is configured to poll multiple game engines currently executing game instructions for requests to transfer additional game program instructions and schedule transfer of additional game program instructions during different time intervals for different ones of said multiple game engines in response to said requests.
63. The cable TV network entertainment head-end in claim 45, wherein the controller is configured to interleave transfers of additional portions of games corresponding to the multiple game engines while each of the multiple game engines is executing previously-transferred game portions.
