The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:
1. A ballast system for a sailing boat comprising:
an elongate body having a first end and a second end;
means for suspending the elongate body from a hull of a sailing boat positioned at the first end of the elongate body;
a ballast weight positioned at the second end of the elongate body; and
means for moving the second end of the elongate body relative to the hull of the sailing boat.
2. The ballast system as defined in claim 1, wherein the means for suspending the elongate body is a first pivotal mounting such that the elongate body is pivotally movable between a first limiting position extending from the pivot position toward a stern of the sailing boat substantially parallel with and closely underlying the hull, and a second limiting position depending substantially perpendicular to the hull.
3. The ballast system as defined in claim 1, wherein the ballast weight is pivotally mounted to the second end of the elongate body by a second pivotal mounting.
4. The ballast system as defined in claim 3, wherein the ballast weight is elongate with a first end, a second end and a top surface, the second pivotal mounting being along the top surface at the centre of balance between the first end and the second end such that the ballast weight maintains an orientation substantially parallel to and underlying the longitudinal axis of the sailing boat regardless of the positioning of the elongate body.
5. The ballast system as defined in claim 2, wherein the means for moving the second end of the elongate body relative to the hull of the sailing boat is capable of maintaining the elongate body at any selected position between the first limiting position and the second limiting position.
6. The ballast system as defined in claim 1, wherein the means for moving the second end of the elongate body relative to the hull includes a gear assembly powered by a motor.
7. A ballast system for a sailing boat comprising:
an elongate body having a first end and a second end;
a first pivotal mounting for suspending the elongate body from a hull of a sailing boat positioned at the first end of the elongate body, such that the elongate body is pivotally movable between a first limiting position extending from the pivot position toward a stern of the sailing boat substantially parallel with and closely underlying the hull, and a second limiting position depending substantially perpendicular to the hull;
an elongate ballast weight having a first end, a second end and a top surface, the ballast weight being pivotally mounted by a second pivotal mounting to the second end of the elongate body, the second pivotal mounting being along the top surface at the centre of balance between the first end and the second end such that the ballast weight maintains an orientation substantially parallel to and underlying the longitudinal axis of the sailing boat regardless of the positioning of the elongate body; and
means for moving the second end of the elongate body relative to the hull of the sailing boat.
8. The ballast system as defined in claim 7, wherein the means for moving the second end of the elongate body relative to the hull of the sailing boat is capable of maintaining the elongate body at any selected position between the first limiting position and the second limiting position.
9. The ballast system as defined in claim 7, wherein the means for moving the second end of the elongate body relative to the hull includes a gear assembly powered by a motor, the gear assembly including a drive gear rotated by the motor and a driven gear mounted to the first end of the elongate body.
10. A ballast system for a sailing boat comprising:
an elongate body having a first end and a second end;
a first pivotal mounting for suspending the elongate body from a hull of a sailing boat positioned at the first end of the elongate body, such that the elongate body is pivotally movable between a first limiting position extending from the pivot position toward a stern of the sailing boat substantially parallel with and closely underlying the hull, and a second limiting position depending substantially perpendicular to the hull;
an elongate ballast weight having a first end, a second end and a top surface, the ballast weight being pivotally mounted by a second pivotal mounting at the second end of the elongate body, the second pivotal mounting being along the top surface at the centre of balance between the first end and the second end such that the ballast weight maintains an orientation substantially parallel to and underlying the longitudinal axis of the sailing boat regardless of the positioning of the elongate body; and
a motor and gear assembly for moving the second end of the elongate body relative to the hull of the sailing boat, the gear assembly including a drive gear rotated by the motor and a driven gear mounted to the first end of the elongate body.
11. The ballast system as defined in claim 10, wherein motor and gear assembly are capable of maintaining the elongate body at any selected position between the first limiting position and the second limiting position.
12. A ballast system for a sailing boat comprising, in combination:
a sail boat having a hull with a keel;
an elongate body having a first end and a second end, the first end being secured to the hull of the sailing boat such that the elongate body depends from the hull;
a ballast weight positioned at the second end of the elongate body; and
means for moving the second end of the elongate body relative to the hull of the sailing boat.
13. The ballast system as defined in claim 12, wherein the elongate body is secured to the hull by a first pivotal mounting such that the elongate body is pivotally movable between a first limiting position extending from the pivot position toward a stern of the sailing boat substantially parallel with and closely underlying the hull, and a second limiting position depending substantially perpendicular to the hull.
14. The ballast system as defined in claim 12, wherein the ballast weight is pivotally mounted to the second end of the elongate body by a second pivotal mounting.
15. The ballast system as defined in claim 14, wherein the ballast weight is elongate with a first end, a second end and a top surface, the second pivotal mounting being along the top surface at the centre of balance between the first end and the second end such that the ballast weight maintains an orientation substantially parallel to and underlying the longitudinal axis of the sailing boat regardless of the positioning of the elongate body.
16. The ballast system as defined in claim 12, wherein the means for moving the second end of the elongate body relative to the hull of the sailing boat is capable of maintaining the elongate body at any selected position between the first limiting position and the second limiting position.
17. The ballast system as defined in claim 12, wherein the means for moving the second end of the elongate body relative to the hull includes a gear assembly powered by a motor, the gear assembly including a drive gear rotated by the motor and a driven gear mounted to the first end of the elongate body.
18. A ballast system for a sailing boat as defined in claim 12, wherein the pivotal mounting is located within a housing directly beneath the hull of the sailing boat.
19. A ballast system for a sailing boat comprising, in combination:
a sail boat having a hull;
an elongate body having a first end and a second end, the first end being pivotally secured to the hull of the sailing boat by a first pivotal mounting with the elongate body depending from the hull, the elongate body being pivotally movable between a first limiting position extending from the pivot position toward a stern of the sailing boat substantially parallel with and closely underlying the hull, and a second limiting position depending substantially perpendicular to the hull, the first pivotal mounting being located within a housing positioned directly beneath the hull of the sailing boat;
a ballast weight pivotally mounted by a second mounting pivotal mounting to the second end of the elongate body, the ballast weight is elongate with a first end, a second end and a top surface, the second pivotal mounting being along the top surface at the centre of balance between the first end and the second end such that the ballast weight maintains an orientation substantially parallel to and underlying the longitudinal axis of the sailing boat regardless of the positioning of the elongate body; and
a motor and gear assembly for moving the second end of the elongate body relative to the hull of the sailing boat, the gear assembly including a drive gear rotated by the motor and a driven gear mounted to the first end of the elongate body.

A DNA vaccine against a bovine pathogen, wherein the bovine pathogen is BRSV, BVDV-1, BVDV-2 or bPI-3, comprising at least one plasmid that contains and expresses in a bovine host cell a nucleotide sequence encoding an immunogen of the bovine pathogen, and a cationic lipid containing a quaternary ammonium salt, of the formula
in which R1 is a saturated or unsaturated linear aliphatic radical having 12 to 18 carbon atoms, R2 is an aliphatic radical containing 2 or 3 carbon atoms, and X a hydroxyl or amine group.
2. The vaccine according to claim 1, further comprising DOPE.
3. The vaccine according to claim 1, further comprising bovine GM-CSF.
4. The vaccine according to claim 2, further comprising bovine GM-CSF.
5. The vaccine according to claim 1, further comprising an expression vector that contains and expresses in a bovine host cell a nucleotide sequence encoding bovine GM-CSF.
6. The vaccine according to claim 2, further comprising an expression vector that contains and expresses in a bovine host cell a nucleotide sequence encoding bovine GM-CSF.
7. The vaccine according to claim 5, wherein the expression vector is a plasmid.
8. The vaccine according to claim 6, wherein the expression vector is a plasmid.
9. The vaccine according to claim 1, wherein the nucleotide sequence encoding the immunogen of the bovine pathogen has deleted therefrom a portion encoding a transmembrane domain.
10. The vaccine according to claim 1, wherein the plasmid further contains and expresses in a bovine host cell a nucleotide sequence encoding a heterologous tPA signal sequence.
11. The vaccine according to claim 1, wherein the plasmid further contains a stabilizing intron.
12. The vaccine according to claim 11, wherein the intron is intron II of a rabbit beta-globin gene.
13. The vaccine according to claim 1, wherein the bovine pathogen is bovine respiratory syncitial virus (BRSV).
14. The vaccine according to claim 13, wherein the immunogen is BRSV F, modified by substitution of the BRSV F signal sequence with a human tPA signal sequence, andor by deletion of the transmembrane domain.
15. The vaccine according to claim 13, the immunogen is BRSV G, modified by substitution of the BRSV G signal sequence with a human tPA signal sequence, andor by deletion of the transmembrane domain.
16. The vaccine according to claim 2 comprising a first plasmid that contains and expresses in a bovine host cell a nucleotide sequence encoding bovine respiratory syncitial virus (BRSV) F, modified by substitution of the BRSV F signal sequence with a human tPA signal sequence and deletion of the transmembrane domain and contiguous C-terminal portion; and a second plasmid that contains and expresses in a bovine host cell a nucleotide sequence encoding BRSV G, modified by substitution of the BRSV G signal sequence with a human tPA signal sequence and deletion of the transmembrane domain and contiguous C-terminal portion; and wherein the lipid is DMRIE, whereby the vaccine comprises DMRIE-DOPE.
17. The vaccine according to claim 9, further comprising DOPE.
18. The vaccine according to claim 9, further comprising bovine GM-CSF.
19. The vaccine according to claim 9, further comprising an expression vector that contains and expresses in a bovine host cell a nucleotide sequence encoding bovine GM-CSF.
20. The vaccine according to claim 19, wherein the expression vector is a plasmid.
21. The vaccine according to claim 10, further comprising DOPE.
22. The vaccine according to claim 10, further comprising bovine GM-CSF.
23. The vaccine according to claim 10, further comprising an expression vector that contains and expresses in a bovine host cell a nucleotide sequence encoding bovine GM-CSF.
